Aspen, Hotchkiss boys get rematch for 3A district championship
The top two boys basketball teams in the Class 3A Western Slope League will meet again for the district championship today at Palisade High School.
Tip-off for the title is scheduled for 5:45 p.m.
Aspen (21-0) advanced with a 50-28 victory over Grand Valley (12-9) in the semifinals.
The Skiers went on a 16-2 run in the second quarter and pulled away in the second half.
Aspen’s Andrew Papenfus led all scorers with 18 points.
Hotchkiss beat Basalt 53-47 in the Western Slope League district semifinals at Palisade High School.
Dakota Coats led the Bulldogs (18-3) with 21 points. Pat Sullivan added 11.
In Class 4A playoffs, Montrose upset No. 4 Prairie View 65-57. The Indians advance to play No. 1 Longmont in the Sweet 16. Longmont got past Steamboat Springs 63-39. In the 2A WSL district tournament at Rangely High School, Meeker plays Hayden today for the championship. Meeker beat Paonia 65-30, and Hayden defeated Soroco 51-38.
Erin Vanderpool scored 16 points and Shawnee Young had 10 to lead Grand Valley (18-3) to a 53-39 victory over Hotchkiss in the Class 3A Western Slope League district semifinals at Palisade High School.
Cece Peiper led Hotchkiss (13-8) with 12 points and Amy Miller added 10.
Grand Valley, the league runner-up, meets the WSL regular season champion, Olathe, in the district final at 4 p.m. today.
Olathe defeated Coal Ridge 51-43. Emily Brummitt led the Pirates (21-0) with 16 points.
Tori Verdieck led Coal Ridge (11-10) with 12 points.
In Class 4A, No. 3 Montrose defeated No. 11 Mountain View 47-37, and No. 2 Rifle held on to defeat No. 7 Lewis-Palmer 45-42. In the 2A WSL district tournament at Rangely High School, Paonia defeated Meeker 51-31, and Rangely took down Hayden 47-39. Paonia and Rangely play today for the championship.
