CMU pair earn all-RMAC honors

Jessica Severinsen and Makayla Kovac, the leading hitters for Colorado Mesa and among the top 10 hitters in the conference, made the all-RMAC softball team, announced Tuesday.

Severinsen, a junior from Elizabeth, is the first-team designated player, with Kovac, a freshman from Erie, the first-team shortstop. She’s one of only two freshmen to make the first team.

Payton Kornfeind, an outfielder for CU-Colorado Springs, is the freshman of the year after hitting .520. Katelyn Lovato, a senior outfielder for Adams State, was selected the player of the year and Colorado Mines senior Kelly Unkrich the pitcher of the year. The Orediggers’ Kristie Hawkins was voted coach of the year.

Severinsen wins RMAC awards

Jessica Severinsen had quite a weekend, leading the Colorado Mesa University softball team to a four-game sweep of Chadron State.

The junior pitcher/designated player swept the RMAC awards as the pitcher and player of the week. She picked up two wins in the pitching circle, allowing two runs (one earned) and striking out 12 in 14 innings.

At the plate, she hit .600 on the weekend (6 for 10) with four home runs and seven RBI.

Severinsen, from Elizabeth, is hitting .387 with 14 home runs this season and had an 18-5 pitching record with a 2.31 ERA and 115 strikeouts.

Davis earns weekly honor for CMU

Kyle Davis ran his record to 7-0 last weekend for the Colorado Mesa baseball team in a 9-1 win Sunday over Regis.

Davis, a junior right-hander from Highlands Ranch, was selected the RMAC pitcher of the week after allowing one run on five hits in seven innings. He struck out eight batters, seven on called third strikes.

Davis has a 2.93 ERA with 43 strikeouts for the fourth-ranked Mavericks.
