Baldwin leads Tigers to pair of wins in Arizona
Grand Junction’s Steve Baldwin hit a double that rolled to the wall and scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning of Grand Junction’s 6-5 win over Montgomery Bell, Tenn. on Saturday in Tolleson, Ariz.
Grand Junction (4-1) also defeated Tolleson, Ariz., 10-0, in five innings on Friday as Baldwin threw a no-hitter, striking out eight and walking two.
Also on Friday, Grand Junction’s Sean Rubalcaba started the season going 14 for 14 from the plate until getting his first out. He has 17 hits through his first five games.
Palisade 12, Alamosa 6: TJ Tway went 3 for 4 with a triple and two RBI and Caden Woods went 3 for 4 with three RBI and a double as Palisade (4-1) downed Alamosa in Delta.
Los Alamos 4, Fruita Monument 0: Fruita Monument was held to only two hits in a loss in the Kirtland Central Tournament in Farmington, N.M.
Fruita’s Walker Williams hit a double and allowed one run in three innings after replacing starter Wyatt Vidmar in the fifth.
“One of the reasons we went to that tourney is to play good teams,” Fruita coach Ray McLennan said. “You’re playing against New Mexico teams on new Mexico field with New Mexico officials, so the kids have to learn to deal with that and overcome that.”
Fruita (3-3) opens league play on Friday at home against Durango.
Lars Knutson (50-yard butterfly), Michael Barnosky (400 individual medley, 200 breaststroke) and Drew Herder (diving) won events for host Montrose, which placed second with 558 points.
Cherry Creek won with 667.
The District 51 Griffins took fourth with 306.
Calvin Wright won the 50 backstroke for the Griffins.
Fruita Monument defeated Montrose, 2-1, and Douglas County, 1-0, in the Air Academy Tournament.
Courtney Coffee and Sarah Mercer scored goals against Montrose for the Wildcats(2-2-1) and Rebecca Arotin scored Fruita’s lone goal against Douglas County.
