Battle Mountain to test Palisade’s No. 2 ranking in football

Palisade High School has long been the team to beat in the Class 3A Western Slope Conference.

Battle Mountain wants to be the team to beat this season, and scheduled the Bulldogs for its homecoming game, which kicks off at 7 p.m. Friday.

The Huskies (4-1, 1-1 WSC) will have to beat the No. 2 team in the state to get that distinction.

Palisade (5-0, 2-0) remained second in the Denver Post Media Poll this week behind Vista Ridge. The Bulldogs received two first-place votes from media members across the state. Vista Ridge (5-0) received 16 first-place votes.

Rifle (5-0) moved into the No. 10 spot in 3A. Battle Mountain is one of three teams that received three votes in the poll.

“We want them, too,” Caden Wood said of the Huskies after the Bulldogs’ homecoming victory over Moffat County on Saturday. “It’s like a state championship game. Every game is the most important one of our lives.”

Grand Junction (5-0) remained No. 1 in Class 5A after coming back Saturday to defeat Fountain-Fort Carson 28-14.

The Tigers received eight first-place votes and 137 points. Grandview (4-1) is second with three first-place votes and 129 points, with Mullen (4-1) third with one first-place vote and 120 points.

In 4A, Montrose (6-0) held steady at No. 6, with Valor Christian the overwhelming No. 1 team with all 13 first-place votes.

Aspen (4-1) is ranked seventh in Class 2A and Olathe (3-2) moved back into the poll at No. 10. Brush (5-0) received 11 first-place votes to remain No. 1.

Undefeated Hotchkiss (5-0) is still No. 2 in Class 1A behind Burlington (5-0), which received 10 first-place votes and 109 points. Hotchkiss received 97 points in the voting. Paonia received nine votes.

Norwood (4-1) is ranked fifth in the Class A 8-man poll, with Dove Creek receiving one vote.
