Meth suspect runs, hides
Daniel Alfaro, 41, was arrested early Saturday morning on suspicion of possessing methamphetamine and running away from Mesa County Sheriff’s Office deputies during a traffic stop.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, Alfaro was the passenger in a vehicle stopped Saturday morning on 32 Road south of Interstate 70 Business Loop after it twice veered over the white fog line on the right side of the road. Alfaro exited the car and ran away while the deputy was returning from his vehicle.
Alfaro was found to have three warrants for his arrest, and the car’s driver told the deputy that a holster found in the car’s passenger side, containing needles and a white substance that field-tested presumptive positive for methamphetamine, was Alfaro’s, according to an arrest affidavit.
Deputies later found Alfaro hiding under a camper in the 500 block of Sara Lane, according to the affidavit, and he volunteered that he’d run away because he knew he had warrants.
Inmates clear wildfire fuels
Work will continue this week to reduce the threat of wildfires to the town of Mesa by clearing vegetation that could fuel wildfires.
In a partnership between the Plateau Valley Fire Protection District and the Bureau of Land Management, crews are continuing to clear tamarisk, Russian olive, sagebrush, willows and pinyon-juniper from about 30 acres of the Mesa Creek drainage near Mesa, according to the Upper Colorado River Interagency Fire Management.
The project, funded with $14,000 from the BLM Community Assistance Program, fulfills priorities set by the Mesa County and Plateau Valley Community Fire Protection Plans.
Most of the work is being done by a crew from the Juniper Valley Department of Corrections in Rifle.
