Motorcycle fatality ID’d
David Lee Smithey, 49, Grand Junction, has been identified as the man who was killed in a crash while riding his motorcycle on Orchard Mesa on Saturday morning, according to the Mesa County Coroner’s Office.
Smithey was wearing a helmet when his vehicle collided with a GMC Yukon. Smithey was driving east on U.S. Highway 50 near City Market when he attempted to turn left and came into the path of the Yukon, according to the Colorado State Patrol.
Smithey’s cause of death was from multiple injuries, and his manner of death is considered an accident, the Coroner’s Office said.
5 people escape from fire
Two adults and three children were at home but exited safely during a major house fire Saturday night, according to the Grand Junction Fire Department.
The home at 300 S. Redlands Road is considered a total loss after burning to the ground about 7 p.m.
An emergency call was dispatched at 6:21 p.m. of flames fully engulfing the home. By the time firefighters arrived seven minutes later, the flames mostly had consumed the home, causing firefighters to battle the blaze defensively, the Fire Department said.
The department has not determined a dollar estimate of the damage.
The blaze is under investigation.
According to the Grand Junction Police Department:
■ A 17-year-old boy received a summons Thursday on suspicion of marijuana possession in the 1400 block of North Fifth Street.
■ Two boys received summonses on suspicion of shoplifting at Walmart, 2545 Rimrock Ave., on Thursday.
■ Christopher Fenton, 35, was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of unlawfully entering and staying in a home in the 1100 block of Gunnison Avenue.
The Mesa County Sheriff’s Department did not release a booking report or an activity log on Sunday.
