Stern, Grider qualify for state

Fighting nasty conditions at the Class 5A Northern Region golf tournament at Riverdale Dunes, Grand Junction’s Mark Stern and Fruita Monument’s Ethan Grider both qualified for the state tournament.

Stern shot a 76 and qualified for the second straight year.

“The conditions were really tough, plus there was a rain delay that really ruined the groove,”

Stern said. “But I played well, and didn’t have any high scores that have hurt me before. A bogey was the highest score for me all day.”

Grider played consistently, shooting a 39 on both the front and back nine for a 78.

Central was led by Chad Johnson, who shot an 86. Johnson had a solid front nine finishing at 38, but struggled with the conditions on the back.

“He was close,” Central coach Todd Dixon said. “If he had kept a couple of holes together on the back nine, he could have gone.”

Fort Collins won the tournament with a 222 and Legacy finished second, as both teams qualified for state.
