• Shields shine in Denver
The Shields and Richard Johnson breezed to victories Wednesday in the second round of the Denver City Open men’s open singles division.
Top seed Luke Shields, who had a first-round bye, defeated Ryan Dunn 6-0, 6-0. Luke’s younger brother and No. 2 seed, Clancy Shields, defeated Matt Kranich 6-3, 6-2 and eighth-seeded Richard Johnson won 6-1, 6-1 over Robert Wild.
Third seed Cory Ross of Littleton advanced to the third round as well with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Joseph Lassen. Ross, the Shields and Johnson played in the Elam Classic last weekend.
Luke Shields, who grew up in Grand Junction, could face Richard Johnson in the quarterfinals with the winner potentially meeting Ross in the semifinals. Clancy Shields is on the other half of the bracket.
The Denver City Open men’s singles final is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Sunday.
