• Mavs lose exhibition at Utah Valley
Kurt Bangle scored 17 points, Jase Herl 14 and Sean Flohr 11, but it wasn’t enough in the Mesa State College men’s basketball team’s 95-77 exhibition loss Thursday night to Utah Valley University.
Mesa State shot 51 percent from the field and made 18 of 20 free throws, but Utah Valley scored 22 points of the Mavs’ 15 turnovers and shot nearly 56 percent from the field.
Ryan Toolson, a 6-foot-4 senior guard, scored 27 points for the Wolverines, who got 25 points from 6-1 senior guard Josh Olsen.
The Mavericks play another exhibition game Nov. 15 at the University of Southern Utah.
• Edmiston makes academic all-district
Kaity Edmiston has been selected to the ESPN The Magazine third team Academic All-District team as chosen by the College Sports Information Directors Association.
Edmiston, a 6-foot-1 junior middle hitter for Colorado School of Mines, graduated from Palisade High School. She has a 3.68 GPA in civil engineering. She’s seven total blocks away from moving into fifth place all-time at Mines and is third in career block assists with 264. She leads the RMAC in total blocks with 101 and block assists with 85.
