Mesa wins RMAC golf tournament

Mesa State Golf

There’s nothing like a team championship at the end of the fall season to catapult a golf team into the
winter.

Mesa State College, behind the 1-2 finish of Jennifer Hilts and Sadie Peavler, won the RMAC No. 3 women’s golf tournament Tuesday at Applewood Golf Course in Golden.

Hilts shot a second-round 80 to finish at 157, three strokes ahead of Peavler, who cut 10 strokes off her first-round score, shooting a 75 on Tuesday.

Jessica Berne tied for 15th at 169 after a second-round 84, Afton Balling was 23rd with a 174 and Dana Anderson finished 31st at 181.

“I was hoping they would do this,” Mesa State coach Scott Hansen said of the Mavs’ one-stroke team victory over Fort Hays State. The Mavs shot 660 as a team, Hays 661 and Montana State-Billings 682.

“They showed their scores were going in the right direction. I thought they could (win) if they all put it together. ”

Prep Volleyball

Grand Junction gave its best effort but still fell 3-2 to Montrose.

The Tigers were led by senior Britney Richardson, who returned from an illness to lead the team with 18 kills, five blocks and 15 digs.

A balanced effort helped Palisade to a 25-9, 25-16, 22-25, 25-12 victory over Delta.
Kendra Collette had 16 kills, 16 digs and two blocks for the Bulldogs (10-7, 8-4 Western Slope League). Jenny Thibodeau added 13 kills and Danette Whittington 17 digs.

Soccer

Glenwood Springs got three goals apiece from Ryan Young and Fabian Tatia as the Demons (10-3-1, 8-2-1 WSL) defeated Palisade 9-0 in Glenwood.
