Briefs: Local Sports September 16, 2008
• Ashley Loftsgard led the Mesa State College volleyball team’s defense last weekend, recording 31 digs in the Mavericks’ sweep of Western New Mexico and New Mexico Highlands.
Loftsgard, a 5-foot-5 senior libero from Granby, had 15 digs against Western New Mexico and 16 the next night as the Mavs opened RMAC play 2-0. Her defensive efforts landed her the RMAC Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Mesa State (4-5, 2-0 RMAC) is tied atop the RMAC West standings and plays the two teams tied with the Mavs this weekend, at Fort Lewis (7-3, 2-0) on Friday night and at Western State (3-7, 2-0) on Saturday.
• Mesa in fifth after one round
The Mesa State College women’s golf team is in fifth place with 345 after the first round of the Chadron State Invitational on Monday at the Scottsbluff (Neb.) Country Club.
Senior Sadie Peavler is three strokes back of the leader with an 81. Freshmen Jessica Bevre shot 83, Afton Balling scored 85 and Jennifer Hilts shot 96.
“We don’t have to think we have to make it up with crazy scores,” Mesa coach Scott Hansen said. “Jennifer has to play better and I think she can. (The freshmen) were nervous, but they showed the can dig deep if they have to.”
The Mavericks are 10 strokes behind Western New Mexico.
• Pade receives RMAC honor
Mesa State College senior Nic Pade ( Arvada) is the RMAC Rawlings defensive player of the week.
The senior defensive end had a game-high 11 tackles and had two of the Mavericks’ four sacks, including one in the fourth quarter as Mesa rallied to win.
Pade leads the team in tackles for a loss and tied for most sacks (2.0).
• Anglers celebrate end of summer
The Grand Valley Anglers Chapter of Trout Unlimited and Federation of Fly Fishers will celebrate the change of seasons with the annual End of Summer picnic today (Tuesday SEPT. 16) at Canyon View Park.
Festivities begin at 5:30 p.m. under the Gunnison pavilion shelter. Main dishes will be provided, please bring a salad, dessert or other covered dish to share.
Casting games and other events wil be held.
