Cross country

Alexis Skarda took second place, leading the Mesa State cross country team to a second-place finish Saturday in the Joe Vigil Open in Alamosa.

The 21st-ranked Mavericks finished with 56 points, taking second behind Adams State with 26, but finishing ahead of sixth-ranked Western State (75) for the first time.

Skarda finished the 5K run in 17 minutes, 59 seconds, the first time a Mesa runner finished a 5K under 18 minutes . 

Volleyball

The Mavericks finally won a match in California, sweeping Cal State Dominguez Hills 25-23, 25-19 25-15 in the final match of the UC-San Diego tournament.

The win came after the Mavs lost in four games to UC-San Diego 25-10, 25-20, 15-25, 25-17.
Against Dominguez Hills, though, Mesa State (2-8) put together a more solid attack, with Ali Tompkins recording 14 kills and Bria Lovato 12.
