• Mav golfers finish eighth at Grand Canyon Invite

Four Mesa State College golfers finished within one stroke of each other Tuesday as the Mavericks placed eighth in the Grand Canyon Invitational in Avondale, Ariz.
California Baptist University won the team title with a two-round total of 614. Grand Canyon took second at 619. Mesa finished ahead of RMAC schools Western New Mexico and CSU-Pueblo at 651.
Sadie Peavler led the Mavericks with a 162. Jennifer Hilts, Afton Balling and Jessica Berve each shot 163.
Chelsa Helget of Sonoma State took individual medalist honors at 147. Lubbock Christian’s Kelly Rainbolt and Grand Canyon’s Jacqueline Sneddon finished one stroke behind at 148.

Soccer

• Mesa State College junior Kira Brannan scored a goal in the 82nd minute to defeat Brigham Young University-Hawaii 1-0 late Monday night in Laie, Hawaii.
The Mavericks (7-3-0) took five shots, but only one was on goal, Brannan’s goal.
Mesa State goalkeeper Julie Rasmussen had two saves. BYU-Hawaii took 12 shots.
Mesa State returns to RMAC play Friday at N.M. Highlands.
