Briefs: Mesa State Swimming February 20, 2009

College Swimming
Mesa State College freshmen Gina Panacci and Katie Wedel each won one event Thursday during the first day of the RMAC swim championships in San Antonio, Texas.
Panacci won the 500-yard freestyle in 5 minutes, 16.23 seconds, shaving nearly nine seconds off her preliminary time and 12 seconds off her seed time. Teammates Sarah Hagerstrom placed fourth in 5:28.65, Madoline Morris was sixth in 5:38.50 and Kristen Peterson took eighth in 5:49.05.
Wedel won the 200 individual medley in 2:09.88. She was seeded first with a time of 2:13.29. Teammates Megan Takakura placed fifth (2:16.74), Lauren Brock was sixth (2:16.98) and Amber Haberman took seventh (2:17.33).
Mesa’s Denby Gardiner placed sixth in the 50 freestyle in 25.70 seconds.
The Mavericks’ 200 freestyle relay placed fourth in 1:43.32 and the 400 medley relay was second in 4:05.64. The medley relay was seeded fourth and cut nearly seven seconds off its seeded time.
The RMAC championships continue through Saturday.
