Singles key Mavs’ win at Kearney

The Mesa State women’s tennis team opened the fall season with a victory over the team that knocked them out of the NCAA Central Region tournament last spring.

The Mavericks won five of six singles matches Thursday to defeat Nebraska-Kearney 6-3 in Kearney, Neb.

Kearney won two of three doubles matches and won at No. 1 singles to take a 3-1 lead.

Mesa twin sisters Kelleen and Kaitlan Sera won at No. 2 and 4 singles, respectively.

Victoria Sargent won at No. 3 singles, Amber Armendarez at No. 5 and Cyndle Curfman at No. 6.

The Mavericks play in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Region tournament today through Sunday in Kearney.

The singles and doubles champions advance to the ITA National Small College Championships on Oct. 15-18 in Mobile, Ala.
