Pair of Mavs headed to nationals

Mesa State College juniors Kate Lowder and Victoria Sargent are going to nationals.

The women’s tennis No. 1 doubles team captured the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Region doubles title Sunday in Kearney, Neb., to advance to the ITA Small College National Championship on Oct. 15-18 in Mobile, Ala.

Lowder and Sargent, who were the No. 1 seed, defeated fifth-seeded Nikola Messbarger and Mizuki Takahashi of Nebraska-Kearney 8-4 in the finals.

Lowder and Sargent won four matches in the 27 team field.

Mesa teammate Kelleen Sera made it to the final day in the singles draw, but was eliminated in the semifinals. Fifth-seed Anastasia Dabiza of Upper Iowa defeated Sera, seeded seventh, 6-4, 2-6, (10-6).
