Chadron comeback nails Mav wrestlers
Fourteenth-ranked Chadron State rallied to win the last four matches, including two by pin, to defeat Mesa State 27-15 on Thursday in an RMAC college wrestling match in Chadron, Neb.
Mesa State junior Keith Johnson pinned Jake Lords in the 149-pound match to give the Mavericks a 9-7 lead, and Chris Holzworth extended Mesa State’s lead with an
8-1 decision at 157. Chase Walker, ranked third at 157, went up a weight class and defeated
Bryan Irwin 10-4 at 165, extending the Mavs’ lead further to 15-7.
“We had some opportunities,” Mesa State coach Chuck Pipher said. “The move at 57 and 65 worked. We got two wins there. Andy (Laiminger) had a rough call at the end of his match that was a bum deal. It would’ve been tied 5-5 (wins each).”
After fifth-ranked Brett Hunter won by technical fall at 174 for Chadron, Ty Brown squeezed out a 4-2 win over Laiminger at 184.
Chadron defending national champion Josh Majerus pinned Luke Laurita at 197 and Shaine Odell, who also plays football for Chadron, pinned Dwayne Bacon at heavyweight.
Mesa’s Rhett Breed defeated Ryan Zavala 9-5 at 133 pounds.
