Foster parent open house is tonight

Families who have considered becoming foster parents, and anyone else interested in learning more about Foster Care of Mesa County, should attend an open house tonight from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The open house will be at Four Winds Coffee and Tea, 1235 Bookcliff Ave., and the first five attendees will get a free coffee.

At any given time, the Mesa County Department of Human Services has about 250 children and youth in local foster care, and often children are placed into county care. Foster Care of Mesa County is there to find and license nurturing foster families who can care for children until they are able to return home.

More information can be learned by calling the Foster Parent Information Line at 248-2794.

Kids Count fundraiser is Thursday

The organizers of Kids Voting Mesa County are hoping as many people as possible attend a special fundraiser on Thursday to help keep the group alive, Civics at Sunset.

The organization has run into some financial troubles recently, in part because most of its funding has come from local governments.

Since word has gotten out about those issues, the group has raised about $6,000, but Executive Director Martha Graf says more is needed.

That’s why the group is holding the special fundraiser from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at Springhill Suites, 236 Main St.

Graf asks people to pre-register by going to its website at http://www.kidsvotingmc.org, or call her to RSVP at 245-3414.
