Warriors, ’Cats grab victories at Hinkley
Both Central and Fruita Monument won in Wednesday’s opening round of the Hinkley Holiday Hoops Classic boys basketball tournament in Aurora.
Central defeated Valor Christian 72-56 and Fruita Monument downed Loveland 58-50.
Central quickly took a 24-11 first-quarter lead on Valor Christian.
The Warriors (6-0) led by 21 points but the Eagles pulled to within 10 points three minutes into the second half.
After running a zone defense for much of the game, Central switched to a man-to-man defense and was able to pull away to lead 54-35 by the start of the fourth quarter.
“Clay (Kame) did a nice job distributing the ball,” Central coach Phil Cain said.
Kame finished with 20 points to lead Central. The Warriors had a balanced effort, however, with Sean Citlau scoring 14 points and Kahler Grandbouche and Travis Key each adding 10.
“They ran the offense well,” Cain said.
After scoring the first six points, Fruita Monument watched Loveland go on a 13-point run in the first quarter.
The Wildcats (3-4) outscored the Indians 15-4 in the second quarter to take the lead.
Loveland pulled to within 50-47 with three minutes remaining in the game, but Mike Perry got a couple of steals and assists as the Wildcats held off the rally.
Alex Mende led Fruita Monument (3-4) with 17 points; Perry added 12.
“Perry, TJ Pollock and Brett Nankervis all just played real well,” Wildcats coach Dave Fox said, the latter two playing particularly well on defense.
Fruita Monument must make a quick turnaround. The Wildcats play Cherokee Trail at 3:30 this afternoon, followed at 5 p.m. by Central taking on Rock Canyon.
Pool play continues Friday, with Saturday’s tournament schedule seeded based on the results of the first three days.
