’Cats rally to win 5-game tilt with GJ

Fruita Monument and Grand Junction high schools waged one of their classic Southwestern League volleyball battles Thursday, the Wildcats finally prevailing 3-2 at Grand Junction.

Down 2 games to 1, Fruita Monument won the fourth game 26-24, trailing 23-19 before coming back for a 26-24 victory.

The Wildcats (5-1, 1-0 SWL) won the decisive game 15-9.

Nikki Kikes had 15 kills, three blocks and 18 digs in a strong all-around performance for the Wildcats. Mary McGee matched Kikes’ kills total with 15.

In Palisade, the Bulldogs lost to defending Class 4A Western Slope League champion Battle Mountain 25-19, 25-14, 22-25, 25-20.

Chelsea Lorimor and Morgan Reynolds paced Palisade (1-4, 0-1 WSL) with seven kills each. Lorimor also had three blocks.
