Briefs: Sports Mesa State Roundup April 21, 2009
• Mesa State salvaged a doubleheader split, but Metro State won the series.
The Mavericks (35-7, 25-4 RMAC), who remained second in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division II poll, defeated Metro State 10-3 in the second game after losing 15-6 in the first game Monday at Auraria Field in Denver. Southern Arkansas (41-7) held on to the top spot for the second consecutive week. Emporia State (Kan.) University (37-6) remained third.
Mesa State got off to a good start in both games, scoring four runs in its first at-bat of both games.
Metro State (23-18, 14-14) was able to respond in Monday’s first game, scoring nine runs off Mesa starter Chris Carma (7-2) and held on.
Paonia High School standout and Metro designated hitter Ty Abshire hit a grand slam in the first inning and a two-run double in the second. He was 4 for 4 with six RBI in the game.
Mesa State senior Jason Fronczak (7-0) halted the Mavs’ two-game losing streak, limiting
Metro to one run on three hits in 4 2/3 innings of work.
Marty Rover was 3 for 3 with a two-run single in the sixth for the Mavericks.
