Briefs: Sports Prep Roundup October 25, 2008

Football

The Palisade High School football team got two touchdowns apiece from three different players as it rolled to a 48-6 victory over Rifle on Friday.

The Bulldogs (9-1, 7-1 Class 3A Western Slope Conference) got two rushing touchdowns each from
Aaron Wagler and Travis Fehlman and one from Jesse Brannon.

In addition, defensive back Matt Young returned two interceptions for touchdowns.

Palisade scored three touchdowns in the first quarter to take control.

Fehlman finished with 164 yards rushing on seven carries. Zach Adair had his best rushing game of the season wtih eight carries for 52 years.

Rifle scored on its last play.

The game completed Palisade’s regular season. The Bulldogs get next week off in preparation for the first round of the 3A state playoffs in two weeks.

In other 3A WSC action,

No. 1-rated Glenwood Springs remained undefeated with a 41-7 victory over Moffat County.

Steamboat Springs took a 50-38 nonconference victory at Buena Vista. Eagle Valley kept Battle Mountain winless with a 47-14 win.

Olathe and Grand Valley did their part to set up a showdown for the 2A WSC title. The Pirates defeated Basalt 55-21. Grand Valley shut out Cedaredge 58-0. Both victories were on the road.

Olathe and Grand Valley are undefeated in the conference and play for the title next Friday in Olathe.

In other 2A WSC games, Aspen downed Gunnison 49-6 and Roaring Fork pulled off a mild upset with a 27-20 victory over Coal Ridge.

Hotchkiss stayed unbeaten with a 47-14 A 11-man WSC victory over Meeker. Hayden defeated West Grand 47-12. Paonia took a 58-21 road victory at Rangely.

Norwood opened the Class A 8-man WSC divisional playoffs with a 42-18 victory over Sangre de Cristo.

SOCCER

Hotchkiss advanced to the Class 3A quarterfinals with a 3-0 victory over Faith Christian.

The Bulldogs got goals from Cameron Spadafora, Alex Quinonez and Kasey Sidor.

Hotchkiss plays Thursday against the winner of today’s Colorado Springs Christian-Aspen game. If
Aspen knocks off the top-ranked team, the game will be in Hotchkiss.

Eagle Valley moved on to the 4A quarterfinals by edging Mullen 2-1 behind goals be Ceasar Castillo and Marco Escobar.

The Devils play the winner of today’s Rock Canyon-Longmont game in Wednesday’s quarterfinals.

VOLLEYball

Coal Ridge earned one of the two regional berths from District 6 after finishing second in Friday’s tournament at Coal Ridge.

Classical Academy won three matches to earn the district’s top berth.

Coal Ridge went 2-1, its only loss coming 3-1 to Classical Academy.
