Warriors advance to regional volleyball
The Central High School volleyball team advanced to this weekend’s regional tournament by finishing second in Saturday’s Class 5A District 7 tournament at Denver East.
The Warriors defeated Denver East and Littleton in pool play.
Central (16-5) fell to Legacy in the championship match.
In the District 2 tournament at Grandview, Fruita Monument advanced to the semifinals but was ousted by eventual runner-up Arapahoe.
The Wildcats (12-8) defeated Hinkley but lost to Grandview in pool play.
Montrose won the Class 4A District 8 tournament in Highlands Ranch. Host Rock Canyon finished second, losing to the Indians in the district championship game.
Palisade lost 3-0 to Rock Canyon and 3-0 to Montrose in pool play.
“The day started slow and we never really got going,” Palisade coach Wendy MacAskill said. “Rock Canyon and Montrose are both good teams and we never got to that level of play that we had been at during the end of the season.
“And at this type of event, you have to be playing at your best.”
Eagle Valley and Mullen qualified in the District 7 tournament at Gypsum. Mullen won the district title.
Glenwood Springs, Steamboat Springs and Montezuma-Cortez were eliminated.
Basalt went 0-3 in the 3A District 5 tournament
In the 3A District 7 tournament, Gunnison, Bayfield and St. Mary’s finished pool play tied for first place.
Bayfield got the top nod in the tiebreaker.
Gunnison, which had defeated St. Mary’s in pool play, lost to St. Mary’s 25-20 in a tiebreaker, giving St. Mary’s the district’s second regional berth.
Regional pairings and sites are expected to be announced today by the Colorado High School Activities Association.
Dove Creek advanced to the Class A 8-man round of 16 with a 65-34 victory over La Veta in the district playoffs.
Plateau Valley and Nucla both lost their district playoff games. The Cowboys fell 40-21 at Antonito and the Mustangs were trounced by Sanford 98-14.
Dove Creek joins Norwood, which defeated Sangre de Cristo on Friday, in the 8-man playoffs.
Montrose advanced to the Class 4A state quarterfinals with a 3-2 victory over second-seeded Fossil Ridge.
The Indians play at Wheat Ridge on Wednesday in the quarterfinals.
Glenwood Springs lost at third-ranked Broomfield 4-0.
In the 3A round of 16, Basalt edged Weld Central 1-0 in Keenesburg. Thursday, the Longhorns travel to Colorado Springs to play Fountain Valley.
Aspen lost to top-seeded Colorado Springs Christian 4-0.
Hotchkiss plays at Colorado Springs Christian on Thursday.
