Bulldog volleyball team rolls past Sailors
The Palisade High School volleyball team corrected early mistakes to beat Western Slope League opponent Steamboat Springs in four games at home Saturday.
The Bulldogs (7-2, 2-0 WSL) fell 28-26 in the first game, but decisively won the next three 25-16, 25-18, 25-13.
“We made some early errors in game one, but cleaned it up for the next few games,” Palisade coach Wendy MacAskill said.
The Bulldogs’ win was highlighted by Shannon Rhodes, who had 44 assists, and Jenny Thibodeau, with 30 digs. Audrey Steinkirchner had 25 kills.
Palisade split a doubleheader with Montezuma-Cortez at Kronkright Complex.
In the first game, Palisade used an eight-run first inning to win 12-5.
The Bulldogs (4-10) had 15 hits, including a triple from Casey Brown.
In the second game, Palisade fell behind early and lost 12-11.
The Bulldogs trailed 9-3 entering the top of the seventh but rallied to score eight runs and take the lead.
The rally included a three-run home run by Sierra Detwiler.
Cortez scored three in the bottom of the inning to win it.
Shelby Rubalcaba pitched both games for Palisade.
Grand Junction swept Cortez 7-0 at home.
Because of weather concerns, the teams played 10-game pro-set matches.
Tate Hegstrom won his No. 3 singles match against Nick Haukeness 10-0 and the No. 3 and No. 4 doubles teams also won 10-0.
No. 1 singles player Spencer Weinberg won by default.
Durango 4, Central 3: The Warriors’ only singles win came from No. 2 player Drake Giese, who beat Clay Haidaris 7-5, 6-1.
The doubles wins came from the No. 1 team of Ryler Colunga and Lael Nordstrom and the No. 3 team of Kolten McClasskey and Brent Bollinger, who beat Alec Enssign and Drew Downs 6-4, 3-6 (10-7).
