Bulldogs fall short of hosting districts

A Western Slope League title wasn’t enough for Palisade High School’s baseball team.

The Bulldogs were one spot short of being one of the eight teams to host a Class 4A district tournament this weekend.

The Bulldogs (17-2, 12-0 WSL) received the No. 9 seed in the 32-team field and play in the District 2 tournament hosted by No. 8 Evergreen (14-5) on Saturday. The Cougars tied for second place in the Jeffco League.

Palisade plays No. 24 Lewis-Palmer (7-12) at 12:30 p.m. Evergreen plays No. 25 Windsor (11-8) at 10 a.m. The winners meet for the district title and state tournament berth at 3 p.m.

Montrose (16-3) is seeded seventh and hosts the District 6 tournament. The Indians play No. 26 Glenwood Springs (10-9) at 10 a.m., with No. 10 Pueblo West (13-6) playing No. 23 Kennedy (10-9) at 12:30 p.m. The winners play at 3 p.m.

Durango (12-7) received the No. 5 seed for winning the Southwestern League and hosts the District 4 tournament. The Demons play Delta (11-8) at 10 a.m. No. 12 Canon City (15-4) and No. 21 Wheat Ridge (11-8) are in the same district.

In Class 3A, Western Slope League co-champions Rifle and Hotchkiss will host a district tournament.

The eight district champions advance to the double-elimination state tournament next weekend.

The Bears (17-2) are seeded third in the 32-team field and host No. 14 University (12-7), No. 19 Colorado Academy (12-7) and No. 30 Weld Central (8-11) in District 7. Rifle plays Weld Central at 10 a.m. The district final is set for 3 p.m.

Hotchkiss (17-2) received the No. 4 seed and hosts Western Slope League rival and No. 13 seed Olathe (14-5), No. 20 Peak to Peak (12-7) and No. 29 Centauri (7-12) in District 3. The Bulldogs play Centauri at 10 a.m. The district final is set for 3 p.m.

Cedaredge (9-10) made the District 1 tournament as the No. 17 seed hosted by top seed Faith Christian. The Bruins play No. 16 seed The Classical Academy (14-4) at 12:30 p.m. Faith Christian (18-1) playsNo. 32 Gunnison (9-10) at 10 a.m. The winners meet at 3 p.m. for a state berth.
