Bulldogs lose battle to Roaring Fork

Palisade’s Savannah Hanson puts down a kill Thursday over Taylor Gross from Roaring Fork in a match at Palisade High School.

Maybe in that third and final game Thursday, Palisade coach Wendy MacAskill said, some of the Bulldogs’ fight came from a realization in a previous match.

On Thursday, host Palisade lost to Roaring Fork 25-22, 25-19 and 25-18.

But the Bulldogs didn’t concede the third game, closing to within 19-17 on a monster kill by Morgan Thieszen.

Last week, they’d seen Central come back and win three straight games to take a match.

So, perhaps they knew it was possible, MacAskill said. But belief wasn’t the problem.

“The girls said it in our meeting after the game,”
MacAskill said. “They said we did everything well at some point in the match, and that kind of summed it up.”

Palisade had its moments: It threatened to win the first game, trailing 24-22 when a Roaring Fork player spiked a ball long; in the second game, Alyssa Chutka and Courtney Wells had an assisted block, followed by a Thieszen solo block that left Palisade down just 16-15.

But that’s where Palisade maybe showed too little emotion, Bulldogs libero Courtney Clark said.

“We need to have some energy and get excited after winning a point, and then not get down on ourselves,” Clark said.

Clark is one of six Palisade seniors.

“We’ve been playing together since freshmen,” Clark said. “We have all stepped through it together, and that helps being close because we’re all like family and all get along real well.”

Thieszen led Palisade (0-2) in kills with six, followed by Savannah Hanson’s five.

Palisade heads to Colorado Springs today to play in the Mesa Ridge Tournament.

Its first league game is its homecoming match next Thursday against Delta.
