Bulldogs get home playoff soccer game against Evergreen

The Palisade High School girls soccer team hoped it had done enough in the regular season to get a home playoff game.

The Colorado High School Activities Association released the 32-team Class 4A playoff bracket Sunday, and the Bulldogs found out their 11-3-1 overall record was good enough to earn the No. 16 seed and a home game Tuesday against Evergreen.

“We are pretty excited,” Palisade coach Raina Sorensen said. “I don’t think we’ve had a home game in at least 10 years.”

Palisade’s seeding improved from last season, when the Bulldogs were No. 32 and faced eventual state champion Wheat Ridge in the first round.

This spring, the Bulldogs played well all season, but lost two games down the stretch to playoff teams Glenwood Springs (No. 12) and Battle Mountain (No. 22).

“Our loss to Battle Mountain was actually a good thing because after that we knew we had to step up our game,” Sorensen said. “After that game we started playing our best.”

Flannery Davis led Palisade with 19 goals this season and will play a big part when the Bulldogs take on Evergreen (11-4). The Cougars won five straight games to end the regular season.

If Palisade can get by Evergreen it will face the winner of No. 32 Skyview (4-7-1) and No. 1 Lewis Palmer (15-0).

The game time will be determined early this week.

Also making the 4A playoffs are Steamboat Springs (No. 26 seed), and Montrose (No. 29 seed).

In Class 5A, Grand Junction (11-4) earned the No. 23 seed. The Tigers play Wednesday at No. 10 Columbine (12-2-1).

Grand Junction took a late-season trip to Denver to play Smoky Hill and George Washington. If the Tigers win Wednesday, they could end up facing No. 7 Smoky Hill in a rematch.

Grand Junction finished second in the Southwestern League behind Durango, losing to the Demons twice by one goal.

The season sweep of the Tigers helped Durango land a home game as the No. 14 seed. Durango plays No. 19 Liberty.

In 3A, Coal Ridge (12-1-2) received the No. 6 seed. Aspen (No. 19) plays Telluride (No. 14), with Ridgway (No. 30), Vail Mountain (No. 26) and Basalt (No. 12) also reaching the playoffs.
