Carozza leads marbles competition

Twelve-year-old Katie Carozza of Grand Junction sits in first place in the girls division after the first day of preliminary play in the 89th annual National Marbles Tournament in Wildwood, N.J.

Carozza, last year’s national runner-up, won 12 of her 14 matches Monday, while Glade Park 10-year-old Anna Lee is in 10th, posting a 6-8 mark.

In the boys division, Glade Park’s Sam Lee, 12, finished Day 1 in second place with a 12-4 record, while 13-year-old Jonathan Blair is in fifth at 11-5. Blair also recorded a stick, a match in which the first shooter wins without the other player getting a turn.

The tourney continues today, the second of three days of preliminaries. The finals are Thursday.

There are 43 competitors this year between the two divisions. The age range to compete is 8 to 14 years old.
