‘Cats end tough four-day stretch with win

Fruita Monument High School’s baseball team had plenty of energy left at the end of a long week.

The Wildcats (9-3, 3-0 Southwestern League), who played their third game in four days, defeated Durango 6-3 on Saturday at Suplizio Field.

“I thought our kids did a good job of playing with energy today,” Fruita coach Ray McLennan said. “They present a different kind of challenge and we answered that. We kept our composure really well and just played.

“They put pressure on you in different ways. We played kind of a nasty game in Farmington. Our players responded today.”

Dallin Wright (1-2) overcame a bad-luck second inning to limit the Demons (5-5, 1-1 SWL) to three runs on seven hits in the complete-game effort. Wright walked one and had three strikeouts.

“He should’ve won a few games beforehand, but he’s been snake-bit a little bit,” McLennan said. “He did a good job. They came back in the second inning, but they didn’t hit him hard, it was just a matter of finding holes. He did a good job of hanging in there.”

The Wildcats took advantage of an error to score two runs in the first inning. Drew Bridges, who was 2 for 4 with three RBI, hit a two-run home run in the third. Jace Griffiths had a RBI single in the fourth and Logan McLennan drove in a run on a sacrifice fly in the fifth.

“We had good at-bats all day long, even our outs were hard hit,” Ray McLennan said. “We put a lot of pressure on them, which is what we wanted to do. We did a good job of tacking on runs.”

Central 11, Windsor 1: The Warriors (7-3, 0-1 SWL) cruised to a five-inning win over Windsor. Central starting pitcher Noah Sanchez allowed four hits and struck out four.

The Warriors got doubles from Derek DiThomas and Kyle Serrano. Alec Rupe added a triple.

Palmer Ride 14, Central 1: The Bears, ranked sixth in Class 4A, pounded out 17 hits to roll to victory in five innings.

Palmer Ridge 11, Palisade 0: The Bulldogs (2-6) had four hits in a five-inning loss to the Bears. Pete Lelich went 2 for 3 for Palisade. Bulldog starting pitcher Cody Krabbe struck out four.

Montrose 20, Cortez 1: The Indians (6-4, 1-2 SWL) ended a three-game slide with their first league victory of the season.

Delta 5-11, Steamboat 1-6: Delta (6-2, 3-0 WSL) has won five consecutive games since starting the season 1-2.

Cedaredge 12-3, Basalt 2-5: The Longhorns took the second game of a doubleheader against previously undefeated Cedaredge.
