Cedaredge teen going to California burn unit

J.D. TenNapel will fly to Sacramento, Calif., this morning to receive treatment for first- and second-degree burns he sustained Friday while trying to warn neighbors of a fire in his Cedaredge neighborhood.

A doctor at Shriners Hospital for Children, Northern California — who is rumored to be a fan of Jets quarterback Tim Tebow, just like J.D. — is sponsoring TenNapel’s treatment in a burn unit at the hospital. The doctor saw a story about TenNapel’s actions during a fire that destroyed a barn in northern Cedaredge and invited him to California for treatment.

TenNapel, 15, received treatment at Delta County Memorial Hospital over the weekend. J.D.‘s father, James TenNapel, said the decision to treat the burns on his son’s back, face and right arm and leg in California should not be construed as a dig to the small hospital; the Shriners unit simply is better equipped to deal with J.D.‘s injuries.

“Everyone was resounding that this was what he needed,” James said.

J.D. is scheduled to be examined this afternoon, his father said. J.D. will have surgery Wednesday if necessary, James said, and doctors will work to speed J.D.‘s recovery and look for signs of infection.

James TenNapel said his family greatly appreciates all the support offered his family. The J.D. TenNapel Burn Fund has been set up for donations at Wells Fargo, 500 Palmer St., Delta, CO 81416. Call a bank representative at 874-6215 to ask questions.
