Cedaredge’s Williams to sign letter to run at FSU
Cedaredge High School track and field coach Kirby Henderson said sprinter Sierra Williams plans to sign a national letter of intent to run at Florida State University.
Williams, who last season was a Class 3A state champion in the 100-meter dash (12.19 seconds) and a state runner-up in the 200 meters (25.33), will sign Wednesday with the Seminoles.
“She just feels like it’s an opportunity to be an impact athlete right away at that level,” Henderson said. “(Saturday) she said she feels comfortable with the coaching staff and just the whole setup.”
Also, Danny Martinez plans to sign a letter of intent to compete in the high jump at Western State, Henderson said.
Martinez’s personal best in the high jump is 6-foot-5.
“Western State right now is ranked way up there as one of the top high-jumping coaching staffs in Division II,” Henderson said. “This is a big event. Cedaredge High School doesn’t have a lot of intent signing-date things.”
Olathe on a roll: The Pirates’ girls basketball team is riding 10-game win streak. Olathe (12-2, 8-0 3A Western Slope League) is tops in its league and hasn’t lost since Dec. 16 against Grand Junction.
Tawni Middleton is averaging 17.6 points for the Pirates.
Rifle (12-2, 7-1) is right on Olathe’s heels, but guard Chante Church, averaging a team-high 14.6 points, is sidelined with a wrist injury. Rifle Athletic Director Troy Phillips said she sustained the injury in a Dec. 19 loss to Olathe and has been in a cast.
Signing day: Wednesday is the first day athletes in several sports can sign letters of intent with NCAA institutions.
The football signing period runs through April 1. Field hockey, soccer, track and field, cross country and men’s water polo athletes can sign between Wednesday and Aug. 1.
Basketball’s regular signing period is April 11-May 16, with all other sports April 11-Aug. 1.
Coaches, athletic directors or parents of Western Slope athletes who are signing their letters of intent Wednesday or throughout the signing periods are asked to contact The Daily Sentinel and provide information on the athlete, sport, college, along with photos of the signing ceremony.
