Central High School softball team draws top honors
With a 19-4 record, the Central High School softball team drew top honors Friday when the Southwestern League’s All-Conference team was announced.
Central led the way with six first-team selections.
Third baseman Rachel Romine, right fielder Karen Hayter, center fielder Whittney Stone, catcher Danielle Romine and pitchers Mikayla Duffy and Ashley Goletz all earned first-team distinction for the Warriors.
Romine, a senior, and Duffy, a sophomore, are repeat first-team selections from last year’s team.
Hayter was a second-team all-conference selection last year. They were the only players earning all-conference designation last season.
Grand Junction had four players selected to the first team — senior shortstop Andrea Rascon, sophomore first baseman Paula Lage, sophomore left fielder Kelsey Jull and sophomre catcher Maddie Taylor.
Junior third baseman Brooke Williams and junior catcher Ashleigh Wissel are first-team selections for Fruita Monument.
In a rarity, Danielle Romine, Taylor and Wissel tied in earning first-place votes at catcher.
Montezuma-Cortez senior shortstop Katie Lee and Montrose senior center fielder Chelsea Jurgens rounded out the league’s first-team selections along with Montrose senior infielder Becca Bollinger, who was selected as a utility player.
The team was selected by a vote of the league’s six coaches.
