Central, Montrose players qualify for state tennis tournaments

Central qualified its No. 1 doubles team for the Class 4A state tennis tournament that starts Thursday.

The team of Georgia Swelstad and Alivia Weiszbord, both sophomores, placed second at the Region 8 tournament over the weekend.

Montrose, also competing in the Region 8 tournament, had two regional titles and qualified a total of four flights for state.

Senior Jess Ennis won the title at No. 3 singles, and the team of Briar Cary and Liza Peterson won the title at No. 3 doubles.

Miciah Nichols qualified at No. 1 singles with a second-place finish, as did Natalie Patrick and Sage Ryan at No. 2 doubles.

In Class 3A, Paonia picked up three second-place regional spots.

Kelsey Stroud qualified for state at No. 2 singles, and two doubles teams also qualified: Kambry Hall and Ashley Ziemer at No. 1 doubles, and Macy O’Rourke and Haley Park at No. 2 doubles.

The Colorado High School Activities Association added a Class 3A division this year and restructured the enrollments for three divisions.
