Central rallies past Loveland
The Central High School baseball team pounded out 12 hits and held on for a 4-3 win over Loveland at Suplizio Field on Saturday.
Jake Strickland and Hunter Kelchner teamed up for a two-hitter. Kelchner struck out three in relief.
The Warriors (3-1) gave up three unearned runs in the second to Loveland (1-2-1). Central scored single runs in the second and third innings to pull within 3-2. Then, two runs in the fifth gave the Warriors the lead for good.
Paul Salazar went 2 for 3 with a triple and two RBI. Cade Balleweg also went 2 for 3 with an RBI, and Kelchner had an RBI and went 3 for 3.
Grand Junction 7, Prairie View 2: Grand Junction (4-2) took a 5-2 lead with four runs in the fifth and added two more in the sixth to beat the Thunderhawks (0-4).
Derek Shaver picked up the win for Grand Junction, giving up only two hits and two runs with five strikeouts in five innings. Andrew Mantlo went 3 for 4 with an RBI and Nick Arcieri and a triple that scored two. Shaver was also 2 for 3 with an RBI.
Valor Christian 9, Delta 4: Delta played a solid game but gave up four runs late to fall to Valor Christian.
The Panthers (2-2) took a 4-3 after the third but the Eagles (2-0) scored three in the fourth and two in the sixth and seventh to get the win.
Justin Violett went 3 for 4 with three RBI and a double for the Panthers.
Palisade 13-16, Steamboat Springs 3-3: Palisade (3-1, 2-0 Western Slope League) started league play with a doubleheader sweep of Steamboat Springs (1-2, 0-2 WSL) at home.
Daniel McLean and Isaac Maestas each had three RBI for Palisade, which also drew 10 walks in Game 1.
Brett Wagner went five innings, gave up just one hit and struck out 12.
In the second game, Maestas had a triple, a double and drove in five runs to lead Palisade.
Track and field
The Delta Invitational meet was won by the boys and girls teams at Montrose High School.
Some notable wins included Zack Allen of Hotchkiss, who won the boys high jump at 6 feet, 4 inches.
Cedaredge’s Isaac Swoffer won the 100 meters in 11.51 seconds and the long jump at 20 feet, 3 ¾ inches for the Bruins.
Palisade’s Zaccre Kenward was also a two-event winner, taking the 200 in 22.44 and the triple jump at 42 feet.
For the girls, Delta’s Lily Lockhart cruised to wins in the shot put (39-7 ¼) and the discus (128-9). Palisade’s Laura Richardson won the 100 in 13.64, and the triple jump at 31-1 ¾.
Montrose’s Madisyn Minerich won the 400 in 1:01.05 and the 200 (27.33).
Brianna Van Vleet of Paonia was an easy winner in the long jump with a mark of 18-2.
