Central shut out in Delta

Playing the third of three games in a four-day stretch left Central’s girls soccer team a little weary in Monday’s trip to Delta.

Lindsey Gardner, Kristin Gardner and Joanna Brieze all found net for the Panthers in a 3-0 win for Delta (1-1).

“This was our third game in four days, and we’ve got another one on Wednesday,” said Central coach Jacob Pingel, whose team will host Coal Ridge at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Walker Field. “We’re fighting through it, trying to build and work on a few things.”

Marisa Brown made nine saves in net for the Warriors, who dipped to 0-2-1 on the young season.

The Celtics were led by Trevor Olkowski, who finished with 12 points, and Andrew Hansen, who scored eight. Beau Varner led the Spurs with nine points and Trey Morrill and Ryan Biggs each scored seven.

In the third-place game, the Delta Panthers defeated the Palisade Mavs 50-45. Tristan Brown led Delta with 19 points and Daniel McLean scored 16 points for the Mavs.

The Mesa County Junior Basketball Association is made up of boys in 7th and 8th grade from the Grand Valley, Delta, Montrose and Rifle.
