Central sweeps Durango in softball doubleheader

Central’s Tyler Hays connects on a double Saturday in the Warriors’ 6-5 victory over Durango in the first game of a doubleheader at Grand Mesa Little League. Central won the second game going away.

Central High School rallied late Saturday to defeat Durango in the opener of their Southwestern League softball doubleheader. Then the Warriors (4-0, 4-0 SWL) avoided any suspense in the second game to sweep the Demons.

Central scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game, then added a run in the eighth to beat the Demons 6-5 in the opener. Taryn Smith and Amanda Etcheverry handled the pitching for Central.

In the second game, freshman Melissa Gellermann was the winning pitcher.

Grand Junction 11-16, Montezuma-Cortez 0-2: The Tigers got a five-inning shutout from Elisha Jahnke in the first game, and Grand Junction (4-0, 4-0 SWL) pounded out 18 hits, including eight doubles.

Haley Hutto was the winning pitcher in Game 2 and benefitted from 17 Tiger hits, including seven for extra bases.

“The girls played good all the way around,” Grand Junction coach Adam Diaz said. “We had a lot of substitutions, and those girls got some hits and made some good defensive plays, too.”

Montrose 14, Eagle Valley 3:Vanessa Nelson had three hits, including a home run and a double, to lead the Indians (3-0) to a nonleague victory. Molly Collins pitched the first four innings for Montrose to earn the win.
