Central Ariz. still on top of JUCO poll

Central Arizona College remains the top-ranked team in the National Junior College Athletic Association/Perfect Game USA Division I baseball poll, released Wednesday.

The Vaqueros (48-12) won the Region 1 championship and host the Western District tournament beginning today for a berth in Alpine Bank Junior College World Series. They open the district tournament against No. 4 Salt Lake (Utah) Community College (47-14) in the double-elimination tournament.

The Bruins advanced to districts after defeating No. 5 Western Nevada twice to claim their first Region 18 title since 2002.

No. 18 Lamar Community College (46-15) and Yavapai (Ariz.) College (36-25) round out the Western District field.

No. 2 Grayson County (Texas) College (42-15) has already qualified for the World Series, along with No. 6 Navarro (Texas) College (42-17), No. 8 Chipola (Fla.) College, No. 17 Seward County (Kan.) Community College (44-18) and No. 21 Southern Union State (Ala.) Community College (41-18).

No. 3 Howard (Texas) College, No. 9 San Jacinto (Texas) College and No. 10 Northwest Florida State College have been eliminated from World Series contention.

Ten teams in the top 25 are still World Series contention:

No. 1 Central Arizona College (48-12)

No. 4 Salt Lake (Utah) Community College (47-14)

No. 7 Walters State (Tenn.) Community College (42-13)

No. 14 Georgia Perimeter College (42-15)

No. 15 Pitt (N.C.) Community College (37-11)

No. 18 Lamar Community College (46-15)

No. 19 Jefferson (Mo.) College (41-19)

No. 20 Eastern Oklahoma State College (37-20)

No. 23 Iowa Western Community College (37-17)

No. 24 Delgado (La.) Community College (40-15)
