Central wrestling coach Gurule temporarily suspended

Central HS wrestling coach Laurence Gurule at the State Wrestling Championships in Denver.

Central High School’s wrestling team is off to a rough start.

The 13th-ranked Warriors had two returning state placers dismissed from the team for violating School District 51 policy and another returning state placer suspended for the first 20 percent of scheduled matches.

Now their coach, Laurence Gurule, has been suspended for violating a Colorado High School Activities Association rule.

Central High School Athletic Director Randy Powell wouldn’t say why Gurule was suspended, but Gurule confirmed Tuesday he allowed an eighth-grader to practice with the high school team last week, a violation of CHSAA rules.

Gurule wasn’t allowed to coach the Warriors (3-1) last weekend at the Fruita Monument Duals and he won’t be allowed to coach Central in a Southwestern League dual Friday night against Montrose.

Gurule will be allowed to return Saturday during the Maverick Duals tournament.

Assistant coaches Clint Trujillo, Lucas Archuleta and Mark Wilson coached the team last weekend and will coach the Warriors until Gurule returns.

Powell said the issue has been reported to the CHSAA. He expects CHSAA to make a ruling at some point, but doesn’t know the time frame.

CHSAA Commisioner Bill Reader said Tuesday he has not yet reviewed the report.

The activities association has several options, from taking no further action since Central reported the infraction and took immediate action to rectify the situation, to putting the Warriors on restriction.

A penalty of restriction would would prevent the team from participating in post-season competition.
