Central’s Espinoza sets the pace

Delta crushes Moffat County in Class 2A football

Ivory Espinoza of Central won the Tiger Invitational on Friday at Canyon View Park, her second title of the cross-country season.

Central High School had runners win both individual races at the Tiger Invitational on Friday at Canyon View Park.

For the girls, Ivory Espinoza picked up her second win of the year with another impressive run. The Central senior slowly pulled away about halfway through the race and went on to win with a time of 19 minutes, 32.1 seconds.

Ashlin Goble of North Sevier High School in Salina, Utah, was second at 21:07.7.

Grand Junction’s Mandy Moran was sixth at 21:14.0

In the boys race, Central’s David Cardenas took the lead in the final kilometer of the 5K and showed some impressive speed down the stretch to win in 16:11.0.

Telluride’s Jaden Evans was second in 16:45.6.

Central’s Tyman Smart, who won the Warrior Invitational earlier in the season, was third, passing a number of runners in the second half of the race to post a time of 16:52.3.

Grand Junction’s Aaron King placed 11th in 17:55.6.

Greeley Central’s 42 points won the team title, with Gunnison (44) in second and Central placing third (50). Gunnison scored 52 points to win the girls team title.


Delta (1-1) raced to a 27-0 lead against Moffat County and went on to a 40-7 nonconference Class 2A home win.

Rifle (2-1) was an easy winner in 3A, beating Florence 40-0 at home.

It was a tough night for the Class 1A Western Slope Conference in nonconference action. Hotchkiss (1-1) lost to Coal Ridge 26-14; Aspen shut out Cedaredge (1-1) 40-0; and Basalt blanked Grand Valley (1-1) 44-0.

Olathe beat Gunnison 47-18 on Thursday.

Plateau Valley picked up its first win of the season in 8-man, 34-6 over Dove Creek.


Fruita Monument pushed its record to 6-1 by sweeping Air Academy 25-15, 25-23, 25-14.

De Beque claimed a 26-24, 
25-9, 25-23 victory over Ouray. The Dragons (3-2) pushed their win streak to three matches.


Fruita Monument got a strong pitching performance and a home run from Brandi Haller to beat Denver East 15-9 for their first win of the season.

Haller also had a grand slam against Cherry Creek but lost 13-9. The Wildcats also lost to D’Evelyn 11-2.

Central won its first two games at the Dave Sanders Tournament in Aurora, beating Lakewood 9-6 on Thursday and Smoky Hill 11-4 on Friday.

Northglenn opened with an eight-run first inning and cruised to an 18-8 victory against Grand Junction (2-7) at the Mile High Invitational in Denver.


Sam Pflug scored a pair of first-half goals to lead Fruita Monument to a 4-0 victory over Air Academy in Colorado Springs.

Both of Pflug’s goals came on assists from Tyler Speer to help the Wildcats (2-1) rebound from their Southwestern League loss to Durango on Tuesday.

Grand Junction beat Fountain-Fort Carson 6-0, with Jake Chaffetz scoring twice.
