Central’s Rubalcaba forfeits at 126

DENVER — Central High School junior Jacob Rubalcaba forfeited his quarterfinal match Friday morning in the Class 5A State Wrestling Championships.

Rubalcaba made weight at 126 pounds and wasn’t injured.

Central coach Laurence Gurule declined to comment about the matter. Attempts to reach Central High Principal Jody Diers were unsuccessful Friday.

Rubalcaba’s parents expressed heartbreak for their son, but they declined to explain what happened. They said they are meeting with school officials Monday.

“He’s heartbroken,” Jacob’s father, Frank Rubalcaba, told The Daily Sentinel, holding back tears.

“It’s disappointing he can’t wrestle,” said his mother, Theresa Rubalcaba.

“We’re very supportive of the team,” she added.

“Laurence is a great supporter of athletes,” Frank Rubalcaba said.

Jacob Rubalcaba reached the semifinals and placed fourth at state last year. Thursday, he won his first-round match 14-3 and ran his record this season to 24-8.
