CHSAA releases FB playoff pairings

Grand Junction receiver Dion Martinez catches a pass Oct. 25 in the Tigers’ 49-7 win over Central. Grand Junction is seeded No. 10 for the 5A playoffs.

Grand Junction received the No. 10 seed in the Class 5A state football playoffs and will host No. 23 Westminster in a first-round game.

The pairings for classes 5A, 2A and 1A were released Sunday by the Colorado High School Activities Association, but the dates and times of the games remain to be determined today. Classes 4A and 3A have regular-season games this week, and their state pairings will come out Sunday, Nov. 3.

Class 5A has 32 teams in its playoff field, and 2A and 1A each have 16-team fields.

The Tigers enter the playoffs with a 7-2 record and will be the Southwestern Conference champion if Montrose (8-1, 2-1 SWC) defeats winless Central in a conference game Friday.

Westminster is 5-3 and finished second to Prairie View in the 5A East Metro Conference with a 4-1 mark.

Grand Junction and Westminster faced two common opponents during the regular season: No. 13 Prairie View (7-2) and No. 32 Mountain Vista (3-6).

Grand Junction opened the season with a 61-42 win over Prairie View and whipped Mountain Vista 49-13. Westminster lost to both schools, bowing 41-22 to Prairie View and 35-20 to Mountain Vista.

The winner of the Grand Junction-Westminster game will play the winner of the game between No. 7 Columbine (8-1) and No. 26 Hinkley (5-4). Reaching the quarterfinals could bring a game against 5A’s No. 2 seed, Valor Christian (8-1).

Fairview, the only undefeated team remaining in 5A, received the No. 1 seed.

Class 2A

No. 11-seed Olathe will travel to No. 6 Bennett (7-2) for a 2A first-round playoff.

Olathe (6-3) finished second to Gunnison, which earned the No. 5 seed, in the 2A Western Slope Conference. The Pirates lost to Gunnison (7-2) on a last-second field goal in a battle of conference unbeatens Friday.

Bennett has won seven games in a row since losing its first two games of the season.

The winner of the Olathe-Bennett game will face the winner between No. 3 Platte Valley (7-1) and No. 14 Ridge View Academy (4-4) in the quarterfinals.

Brush (8-0) received the No. 1 seed, and Manitou Springs (9-0) got the No. 2 seed.

Class 1A

Paonia received the fourth seed in Class 1A and will host 13th-seeded Colorado Springs Christian in a first-round playoff. Meanwhile, No. 6 Hotchkiss will host No. 11 Burlington, and No. 12 Cedaredge will travel to No. 5 Monte Vista.

Paonia (8-0) is fresh off a 40-0 win Friday over Cedaredge that made the Eagles the outright 1A Western Slope Conference champion with a 5-0 mark instead of sharing it with Hotchkiss and Cedaredge.

Colorado Springs Christian (6-3) tied for second with a 5-2 mark in the 1A Tri-Peaks Conference, which was won by undefeated Buena Vista, the top seed in 1A and last year’s state runner-up in the class.

The winner between Paonia and Colorado Springs Christian will play the winner of the Cedaredge-Monte Vista game in a quarterfinal.

Monte Vista is 7-2 and finished second to No. 3 seed Centauri (8-1) in the 1A Southern Peaks Conference. Centauri handed Paonia its lone loss, 27-14, on Sept. 14.

Hotchkiss finished second in the 1A WSC and is 7-2 entering the playoffs, where the Bulldogs have reached the semifinals each of the previous three seasons.

Burlington will bring a 6-3 record to Hotchkiss, and the Cougars finished second in the 1A South Central Conference to undefeated No. 2 seed Limon.

The Hotchkiss-Burlington winner will face the winner between Centauri and No. 14 Wray (5-4) in the quarterfinals.
