Class 5A golf tournament halted by weather

AURORA — Monday was a golfer’s worst nightmare.

The wind kept howling, blowing and swirling. It never ceased.

Blustery conditions suspended play at the Class 5A girls golf state tournament Monday at CommonGround Golf Course in Aurora. The first round will continue at 6:50 this morning, followed by the final 18 holes of action.

“Everybody else is playing in it, too,” Central’s Loren Forney said. “There were some higher scores, but you can’t get down on yourself.”

Forecasters reported the wind Monday reached 60 mph.

The gusts knocked over golf bags. Sand from the bunkers sprayed the course. Nothing stayed still.

Not exactly ideal playing conditions, Forney said.

“It does get frustrating,” she said. “But you have to play through it. You have to be smart about it.”

No one completed the opening round.

Fruita Monument’s Summer Igo, Tymerie Ho and Jessica Sinner; Grand Junction’s Jordan Fellhauer and Jordan Tufly; and Central’s Forner and Brittany Hoppe will all hit the links again today.

Forney began her first round on the 10th hole, and was in the second threesome to tee off. She completed 11 holes before played was called.

“The last few holes, it was tough,” Forney said. “It was tough.”

Forney said she tried to block out the powerful wind. But with the force of the gust and accompanying noise, that was easier said than done.

“It impacted my short game,” Forney said. “The last few holes, though, it was messing with my driver.”

Forney entered the state tournament on fire.

The Warriors’ standout is coming off a first-place showing at the Class 5A Northern Regional. She shot a 76 at Ute Creek Golf Course in Longmont to win the event.

Though she’d rather have completed her first round Monday, Forney doesn’t mind the wind break. She said she’ll be ready for 25 holes today.

Plus, a longer day on the course may come in handy in the future.

“I’ve been working toward state all season,” Forney said. “I’ve gotta get used to this, because playing in college you play 36 holes every now and then. Let’s hope it’s not this windy, though.”
