CMU cross country fundraiser gives runners a chance to get muddy

Participants can win prizes and be recognized for being the muddiest or best dressed if they’re willing to run through a mud-filled obstacle course testing their physical talents.

The Mucked Up Desert Challenge takes place at 10 a.m. Saturday in the desert north of Walker Field Airport off 27 1/4 Road and H Road.

Proceeds from the challenge will benefit Colorado Mesa University’s cross country and men’s track athletic scholarship fund, the Grand Junction Fire Department and people who have lost homes to Colorado wildfires.

The Mucked Up Desert Challenge is a 5-kilometer (two laps) obstacle course that includes a mud hill, tire run, hay-bale climb, mud crawl, balance beam, cognitive test, fire pit and rope swing.

People of all ages are eligible to participate.

All participants will get a free T-shirt. Participants who are 21 and older will get one free beer from event sponsor Palisade Brewery.

Registration is $40 per person or $25 for students by Friday. Participants can register at 9 a.m. the day of at the event for $50 per person or $35 per student.

Participants can register online at There were close to 70 participants registered through Tuesday afternoon, but the challenge organizers are hoping for more than 200.

The event includes live music.
