CMU rally falls short in loss

Colorado School of Mines started hot and finally cooled the Colorado Mesa University bats as the Orediggers defeated the Mavericks 7-5 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference baseball Sunday.

Mines (6-12, 3-7) avoided a series sweep and handed the Mavericks (15-5, 9-1) their first league loss. Mesa won the first three games of the series, scoring at least 11 runs in each game.

Sunday, the Orediggers scored five runs in the first inning, opening the game with a home run and hitting three doubles in the frame. They added two runs in the fifth, then held on as the Mavericks scored three runs in the eighth and one in the ninth. Mesa left two runners on base in the eighth and one in the ninth.

Mesa starting pitcher Aaron Corwin pitched the first 4 1/3 innings and allowed all seven Oredigger runs.

Braden Box, Garrett Carpenter and Mitch Corwin had two hits apiece for the Mavericks, and Mitch Corwin drove in two runs.

Women’s Lacrosse

St. Leo (Fla.) University scored the lone goal of overtime to edge Colorado Mesa University 12-11 in women’s lacrosse Sunday.

St. Leo scored with 1 minute, 32 seconds left in regulation to force overtime, then scored with 1:51 left in the extra period.

Kelly Cronin scored three goals and Coryann Ledford scored two goals for the Mavericks, who led 8-5 at the half. Mesa goalie Lauren Wells made 13 saves as St. Leo outshot the Mavs 29-28.
