CMU student jailed after late-night joyride in campus golf cart

A student faces a possible felony charge after allegedly stealing a golf cart at Colorado Mesa University before crashing into a vehicle in an alleged alcohol-fueled joyride, according to an arrest affidavit.

Charles Barnum, 21, was booked at the Mesa County Jail in the predawn hours of Thursday on suspicion of second-degree aggravated motor vehicle theft, second-degree criminal trespass, and driving under the influence of alcohol.

Grand Junction police were called just before 2:30 a.m. on a report of a man driving a golf cart, which had struck a vehicle in the area of 12th Street and North Avenue.

Across town, a police officer responding to the call said he was turning onto First Street from Patterson Road, when he saw the golf cart in question turning east onto Belaire Avenue from First Street, affidavit said.

The maroon-colored, CMU-labeled golf cart was found abandoned in the Belaire Avenue neighborhood with no sign of the driver.

Barnum, who was identified by an officer as the driver, was contacted about a quarter mile away walking east on Patterson Road, the affidavit said. The affidavit said Barnum smelled of alcohol and failed a field sobriety test.

A CMU representative told police Barnum didn’t have permission to use the cart, which had been taken from a fenced area on the campus. The fence has a gate, but was found to be unlocked, the affidavit said.

The university’s online student directory lists Barnum as a current student.
