Coaching turnover high in Grand Valley

Fruita monument boys soccer coach Dan McKee

There is always turnover in the world of coaching.

Whether from firing or quitting or a mutual separation, the life of a high school coach can be very hard to predict.

This past year in the Grand Valley had a high number of high school coaching turnover. Since January of 2007, there were 10 new coaches hired, the Daily Sentinel’s No. 9 sports story of the year.

Fruita Monument and Grand Junction had the highest number of coaching changes with three each.

Fruita Monument Athletic Director Pat Noland was involved in one of the coaching changes as he was the interim coach when boys soccer coach Dan McKee stepped down. Noland said the number of coaching changes, in his opinion was nothing new.

“For me it was high but in general I don’t know that it was that high,” Noland said. “Central had a couple changes but there is a certain attrition you can expect. You can go a few years where you don’t have very many, but then you can have years where there is a lot.”

Although the three new basketball coaches are just getting their opportunities, one new coach who had success was Tigers softball coach Adam Diaz.
