Coal Ridge FB coach Parker placed on administrative leave

Coal Ridge High School football coach Scott Parker was placed on administrative leave from his coaching duties Thursday for violating the school’s coaching code of conduct, a school spokesman said.

Garfield School District RE-2 spokesman Theresa Hamilton said the administrative leave has no set time frame, but it is pending the conclusion of an investigation into the alleged code-of-conduct violation. Hamilton said she was told by district superintendent Susan Birdsey that the superintendent expects to be “respectfully diligent in her investigation.”

Hamilton said she estimated that the school’s investigation began Wednesday, though she was unclear if the pending investigation prohibited Parker from having contact with any of his players. She did, however, say that the investigation does not affect his teaching job at Coal Ridge, where he serves as a special education teacher.

Attempts by phone to contact Parker, Birdsey, Coal Ridge Athletic Director Rick Schmitz and assistant coach Greg Holly seeking comment were unsuccessful.

Holley, who joined the Coal Ridge staff as an assistant after serving as Roaring Fork’s head football coach from 2008-10, will serve as the team’s interim coach. Hamilton said she believed Holley ran the Titans’ practice Thursday as they prepared for their home game against Delta at 7 tonight. Parker’s status for tonight’s game remains uncertain.

Parker is in his sixth season as the Titans’ head football coach. Last season, Coal Ridge finished 7-4 overall and 4-3 in the Class 2A Western Slope Conference before losing to Kent Denver in the first round of the 2A state playoffs. It was the football team’s first winning record, and postseason appearance, since the school opened in 2005.
