Coal Ridge gets key road victory

CEDAREDGE — Coal Ridge squeezed out a crucial road victory over Cedaredge Friday night, beating the Bruins 35-21 in a cold, physical game.

The Titans (3-3, 1-0 Western Slope Conference) overcame their concern for senior Colton Schelling, who sustained what was believed to be a serious neck injury in the fourth quarter, according to staff on the scene.

The Bruins, (2-4 0-1 WSC) scored first when quarterback Dante Markley hit receiver Drew Beach at the left pylon from 6 yards out with 3:06 left in the first quarter.

On the ensuing possession, Titan quarterback Robby Moore hit Darik Brown for a 37-yard completion, putting Coal Ridge at the 17. On the next play, Moore hit Brown again for a 17-yard touchdown with 30 seconds left in the quarter.

In the second quarter, Moore pitched to running back Cody Walls, who ran the down sideline for a 33-yard touchdown. Moore and Walls connected again on the same play later in the quarter for a 48-yard score.

Cedaredge’s Carter Wasser punched in a touchdown from 3 yards out with 8:49 left in the half.

Cedaredge lineman Tylor Balisteri recovered a fumble late in the second quarter to set up a quarterback sneak by Markley from just inside the 1.

Moore hit receiver Brent Hazzard on a perfect slant route for a 45-yard touchdown early in the third quarter, sealing the Titans’ victory.

In the fourth quarter, a pair of Bruin turnovers and tough defense by the Titans’ line ended Cedaredge’s chance to rally.

Paonia 34 Meeker 0: Adrian Lopez ran for two touchdowns and caught a pass for a score as the Eagles rolled to a Class 1A Western Slope Conference victory.

Paonia (3-3, 1-1 WSC) rushed for 230 yards in the victory.

Rifle 47, Steamboat Springs 12: The Bears ran for more than 500 yards and had seven touchdowns in a Class 3A Western Slope Conference victory.

Rifle (6-0, 3-0 WSC) is the lone unbeaten team in the conference.

In other games, Delta defeated Eagle Valley 27-3, Roaring Fork defeated Olathe 23-22 in overtime and Hotchkiss defeated Lake County 61-0.
