Colo. Mesa grapplers win pair of duals
Colorado Mesa’s wrestling team picked up two victories, including one over a former RMAC rival and Division I opponent.
The 18th-ranked Mavericks (6-1) defeated Grand Canyon (Ariz.), which moved up to Division I this season, 25-12 and defeated Minnesota State-Moorhead 28-12 on Saturday in the Grand Canyon Duals in Phoenix.
It is Mesa’s first victory over a Division I program since it defeated Air Force last season.
Daniel Salazar, James Martinez, Trevor Donarski, Jessie Hoffschneider and Paco Retana won both of their matches.
Mesa won five consecutive matches against Grand Canyon to spark the victory.
Martinez, ranked second in NCAA Division II at 149 pounds, avenged his only loss this season and pinned Grand Canyon All-American Mike Hamel in 4 minutes, 23 seconds. Hamel defeated Martinez in the championship match at the Colorado Mesa Open in November.
Mesa won seven of the 10 matches to defeat Minnesota State-Moorhead.
The match, though, was still in doubt when Retana took the mat. The 197-pound junior pinned his opponent, and Jordan Passehl followed with a pin.
Moorhead won the first two matches, but Salazar got the Mavs going with a major decision at 141 pounds that started a seven-match win streak.
Chester Granard (9-1), ranked eighth at 174 pounds, lost his first match of the season.
Mesa wrestles Air Force and Simon Fraser (British Columbia) University next Saturday in the Tracy Borah Duals in Gunnison.
