Colorado Mesa adds 20 athletes to swim teams
Colorado Mesa beefed up its men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams with the addition of 20 recruits for the 2014-15 season.
Head coach Ron Allen added 11 women and nine men to the program. The 20 swimmers come from as far away as Brazil and all across the United States.
The recruiting class includes Brazilian breaststroker Nicolas Pinto, Hawaiian 50-yard state champion Skyler Hirsch and Colorado state placers Joshua Bedford of Aurora (100 breaststroke) and Jason Hicks of Fort Collins (100 freestyle) on the men’s side.
The rest of the men’s recruits are Riccardo Caldeira of Fort Pierce, Florida, diver Sage D’Ambrosia of Loveland, Kristopher Kolde of Southlake, Texas, Justin Ortiz of Fort Pierce, Florida and Wesley Stutzman of Windsor.
The women’s class includes 2012 Northwest Sectional 200 breaststroke champion Haley Fellows of Beaverton, Oregon, Alabama state placer Olivia Hudson (100 backstroke, 200 individual medley) and Wyoming diver Taylor Browns, who placed third at state.
The rest of the women’s recruits include Hannah Brockie of Colorado Springs, Hailey Gerze of Littleton, Samantha Lenzmeier of Colorado Springs, Hannah Mabile of Frisco, Texas, Abbie Porter of Flower Mound, Texas, Mary Saiz of Pueblo, Katelin Staab of Folsom, California, and Kendall Wingfield of Broomfield.
The Mavericks had 10 seniors on last year’s squad — six men and four women. Of the 10 seniors, three were national qualifiers last season, including All-American diver Brock Martin.
The Mavs open the 2014-15 season with their intrasquad meet on Sept. 27. They host the Intermountain Shootout Oct. 3-4 and the CMU Invitational on Dec. 4-6.
